As a first time renovator, finding your dream team can be an intimidating task. The foundation of renovation success is picking the right team. Our experience within this process over the years has led us to gather a list of key factors to begin looking for at the start of your project!
Have a plan – Before you start searching the internet for contractors and other renovation experts, you need to have a plan for your renovation. If you are a design guru, you may be able to create the plan on your own, but there is nothing wrong with calling a professional. Getting an interior designer or an architect involved is a good idea, but you need to be very clear about what you want from them and how involved they will be.
Do your homework– Always make sure to ask for recommendations at the start and make sure to follow up with research. See new candidates’ work in person and talk to past clients
Meet up– In the end, you will learn something from everyone you meet, whether you hire them or not. This step is important for a couple of reasons. First, you want to make sure you can see eye to eye on the project and communicate well. Second, when the experts see your home in person, they will have a better idea of the project and give you a more accurate estimate. You will be spending a lot of time together, so find people you click with!
Experience matters– It is a nice idea to take a chance on someone young and eager, but it is just too risky to use someone untested. By using a well experienced person in the field, you are able to avoid hurdles you otherwise might come across. With their experience, they will also be able to make unique suggestions that fit your goals and style.
Be prepared to pay– It’s tempting to cut corners to save money, but that can (and most likely will) cost more in the end. If an estimate seems too good to be true, it likely is.
Be present, but don’t micromanage– Once you have hired your team, you do not want to completely disappear from your project. Be present and available to give permission on purchases and design decisions. Monthly or bi-monthly meetings are a good idea to make sure everything is on track and running smooth.
Incorporating these steps into your project, no matter what scale it is, will ensure a successful and smooth renovation, allowing your dream to become a reality to enjoy for years to come. Happy renovating!
